Next USK Talks: January 24, 2021 3pm GMT live on YouTube!
Interview about art history with Mário Linhares on John Ruskin sketching - and thus - saving Venice!
With guest artists: Mário Linhares
And your host: Rob Sketcherman
For our fourth episode, we will be joined by Mário Linhares, Phd Drawing Researcher and former USk Education Director. Continuing our exploration of Urban Sketchers from other eras, we will be talking about the drawing passion of one of the most inspiring artists and thinkers from the 19th century: John Ruskin and his drawings made in Venice.
We will learn about John Ruskin, his background, art references, why Venice was such a big drawing project for him, and the outcome of that passion.
In 2018, the Doge's Palace organized the first big exhibition about John Ruskin's work in Venice. There were previous exhibitions, but none like this one that covered his entire work references like William Turner and gave us rich educational materials like the exact locations where John Ruskin did his drawings.
Finally, we will be talking about the value of his work for any urban sketcher or anyone interested in art. Mário Linhares organized an USk Workshop in Venice that year, working directly with the Education Department of the Doge's Palace, and the participants had the chance to sketch following the path of John Ruskin.
What about the challenge? Prepare yourself for a great journey in your own city!
