A-frames and tuatuas

[By Murray Dewhurst in Papamoa]

I don’t know if they have A-frame houses where you are, but growing up at a beach settlement in New Zealand I lived near a fair few. Built in the 1960’s or ’70’s and ideal holiday houses I guess, cheap to build being constructed from 2 sides tilting on each other like a playing card house. People don’t build them anymore though so maybe they just weren’t much good to live in?

This one has been added to here and there, it’s clean lines butchered with a faux Italian balustrade and an enclosed sun room on the front – not exactly ‘rigidig’ as they say!

I followed the sketch with by collecting tuatuas – you might know them as surf clams. Collect them at low tide while you battle the surf, and make sure you take home some sea water so they can sit in it overnight – this will ensure they spit out any unwanted sand.

Then toast sliced up garlic in a big frying pan, add the tuatuas and a little bit of that sea water. Steam them for a couple of minutes until they open and serve with parsley and some crust bread. Nice!
