It’s all thanks to the The Grey Book which makes me lay down lights on the page first.
When it works well it helps to short-cut the dreaded ‘pencil first’ tendency that tries to sneak in from time to time. I find the looser the initial white is – the better the sketch turns out – and the pencil doesn’t even get a look in.
The old Victorian wooden houses in my neighbourhood are perfect for testing this way of working. Their gabled front rooms can be picked out with the white and the rest can fade back into the grey page creating a sense of depth.
