About the instructor
Cris Franchevich, originally from Brazil, is an architect, urban planner, and a visual artist who is currently living in the U.S. since 2000 with her husband and two daughters. She is a coordinator for the Twin Cities Urban Sketchers in Minnesota and a correspondent for Urban Sketchers Brasil.
Cris explores the urban space with the eyes of an “andarilho”, a Portuguese word meaning a wanderer discovering new territory. Her art making expands past the traditional studio setting into the world, exposing her practice to situations and human interactions that contribute to a visual conversation. Cris’ work speaks to universal notions of global identity and urban issues; a combination of walking, and travel - stepping away from her comfort zone to search for inspiration and new experiences. She gathers these experiences to counterbalance the technical rules of watercolor with the introduction of graphite, charcoal, scrapes, stains, and marks. Gestural and intuitive, although planned, her drawings and paintings are conscientiously subjected to accidents and the unforeseen. Cris describes watercolor as being her way of understanding life, rather than merely a technique.
