[By Tina Koyama in Seattle] Yesterday was my fifth year sketching at the Greenwood Car Show, probably my
favorite summertime event. Subtitled “A mile and a half of classic rides,” the
annual show brings together car enthusiasts and their shiny, souped-up vehicles
from all over the Puget Sound region.

I’ve sketched at this event under the threat of rain and in actual
rain, but yesterday precipitation was nowhere in sight as cars of all makes
lined 20 blocks of Seattle’s Greenwood Avenue.

Some years I sketch portraits of individual cars that catch
my fancy (I have a particular fondness for convertibles). Other times I step
back a bit to capture groups of cars and the general festive ambiance.

As I sketch, all around me buzzes the language of gearheads comparing
notes on the years of work they’ve lovingly put into their vehicles. Although I
can’t comprehend their camshafts and manifolds and customized whatnots, I understand
their labor of love. For one day a year, they get together on this street of
dreams to share their common passion.
