[By Lis Watkins in London] The Whitgift Shopping Centre in Croydon is earmarked for demolition in the near future. The dates are still uncertain but I thought it would be good to follow the process in my sketchbook.
The next few years should provide lots of drawing opportunities as it gets demolished and replaced by a shiny new Westfield development.
Originally built in the 1960s, it is home to about 100 shops and cafes, including lots of the British High Street staples; Marks and Spencer, Sainsbury's, Hennes etc. It was modernised in the 1990s, with a roof being added but already there are quite a few empty units as businesses move out.
With the drawings so far, I've just been sitting in cafes and on benches as I've been conscious of the patrolling security guards. It might be nice at some point to get permission to make some larger drawings from different viewpoints.
Once the weather warms up, I hope to draw the exterior views before the wrecking balls arrive.
