Drawing “Brightens the Soul”: A Legend Reflects on the Power of Sketching

[by James Richards, Fort Worth]  William “Bill” Johnson has been a profound influence on my philosophies of drawing, design and career across 40 years.  He is a living legend in the world of landscape architecture, and his ideas and drawings have influenced generations of designers across professional disciplines.  I’ve had the great fortune and pleasure of having several one-on-one conversations with Bill over the last two years, and of helping to facilitate–in a small way–a video oral history of his life and ideas, beautifully produced by The Cultural Landscape Foundation.  I think anyone who enjoys and values sketching will be inspired by this short clip from the oral history.

Bill Johnson on the Power of Drawing

One of Johnson’s vision sketches for the University of Michigan Central Campus Plan by JJR, around 1963.
