[By Tina Koyama in Seattle] My favorite sketching subject during the holidays is Santa. It may seem like Old St. Nick has a tough job – wearing that hot suit, tirelessly listening to children’s wish lists, ho-ho-ho-ing without appearing threatening to wary babies. Sometimes the "kid" isn't even human!
But I think the real heroes are Santa’s hard-working helpers. Using noisemakers and toys, they have to distract young kids long enough to snap a photo before the youngsters realize they’re sitting in the lap of some bearded stranger.
Over the years, I’ve witnessed many small children dropped into Santa’s lap to howl in terror. Meanwhile, their moms and the photographer are left to coax and cajole a smile out of the kids, who want nothing to do with the whole traumatic incident.
I hope your holidays are less traumatic. Merry Christmas, urban sketchers!
