[By Pete Scully in Davis, CA] I don't know about you, but the blossom is out here in Davis, California, and spring is well underway. Here are a few recent sketches showing the blossom is now on the trees, and brightening up our campus. Above, the Chemistry buildings, with their white and pale green blossomed trees around them. Just a few months ago these trees were a fiery red and orange (see my sketch). That was appropriate perhaps because the Chemistry buildings seem to have the fire trucks stopping outside more frequently than other buildings on campus, for some reason. I sketched that on Leap Day, the 'extra' day of the year they give us to help even out our slightly off calendars (if they didn't do that, the Sun would come up at lunchtime, Coke would turn to Pepsi and aliens would invade).
Now the building above is Cruess Hall, home of the UC Davis Design Depart (and the Design Museum). The pink blossoms even now have started to grow darker. Here is a fun announcement, I will be holding an exhibition of my sketchbooks at the UC Davis Design Museum this coming fall, from September to November, possibly along with a talk in October. If you are in the area, do come by!
And finally, the pink blossom on the corner of 3rd and University. Spring comes early in Davis, but it is all too brief.
