By Rene Fijten, The Netherlands while visiting Rome.
All the world seems to embrace Halloween and turn it into a circus.
Forgetting that it is based on "all hallows day" (Allerheiligen in Dutch). Here in these parts we visit the graveyards today, to pray and remember our late family members. All tombs are cleaned and fitted with fresh flowers or bouquets. And afterwards we gather as family and drink coffee with "vlaai" (our local type of cake).
Anyway, fitting for today is this scene I made in Rome this summer: the chapel of the Santa Maria della Concezione. A monk decorated the chapel of this church using the bones of hundreds of deceased monks. Quite chilling. I was not allowed to make pictures there (I wouldn't have done it anyway, out of respect), but they allowed me to make sketches.
