The fine weather and light has inspired me to try my hand at more colour sketching this summer as I get to know Los Angeles. I've been exploring primarily Culver City where I work. There are some quite radical architectural developments especially in the Hayden Tract from architect Eric Owen Moss. This is his 'Samitaur' building.
Nearby in the Helms district is this private residence designed by its architect owner.
This minimal private residence is as plain as a bunker and brightened only by the giant flower-pot out front.
There are more traditional houses too, of course, and their form and colours often catch my eye.
Then there are the eccentric houses, hidden 'fairy tale' homes . . .
The Lawrence and Martha Joseph Residence
This exotic club/bar is on Washington Blvd.
The Baldwin Hills are a great vantage point in Culver City overlooking most of L.A. Looking west towards the ocean LAX is visible on the left. I'm fascinated by those nodding oil derricks.
Further afield, down the coast I found some great subjects in the power plants at El Segundo . . .
. . . and the Point Vicente Lighthouse
Then finally, closer to home, a fishing boat at Marina Del Rey
