Recently I found myself contemplating closed versus open compositions in sketchbooks. Their was an influx of contrasting images on the USK Flickr page showing either vast open spaces that might overwhelm or consume a tiny book and those that electrified a very shallow layered claustrophobic space that might intertwine the viewer and image. It seems rather a complex set of relationships between the elements of a picture and their relationship to the picture frame. Even more conceptually complex when you consider the idea of the open or closed sketchbook and the manner that we involve the reader/ viewer. In addition to the post here, Rolf Schroeter and Marion Rivolier are correspondents with contrasting examples of the ideas.

As a general note their have been some nice changes to the desktop view of Flickr groups and the discussions and news sections are more prominent in a beta view. So seems like a nice opportunity to take the weekly theme challenge to keep your sketch booking goals active part of living.
