Flowering Pohutukawa have started appearing in my sketches — a sure sign that Christmas must be here! Pohutukawa are found along the coast of the upper North Island, the blooms come out around Christmas every year and have no petals, consisting instead of hundreds of bright red stamens.

This is Devonport above on Auckland's North Shore, looking up Devonport's main drag past the old Esplanade Hotel with pohutukawa in the foreground.

Below is the old green keepers cottage at Victoria Park in the city. It's had a bit of a make-over recently and is now the imaginatively  named Green Keeper CafeSurrounded by Pohutukawa and Puka trees you hardly notice the traffic or that it's being monstered from behind by the glass Vodafone building. They do a pretty nice Tempera Prawn Po-boy too.

I might just have to check it out next time I'm home!
Thank you Mr Dewhurst, from an old, cosmopolitan Kiwi.

Nice one's Murray
Pohutukawa trees are not out in bloom in Nelson yet, we have no Puka trees that I'm aware of.

Will be up in the big smoke myself attending a family Wedding last week of the Year.
Urbanely yours

Glad that they're keeping that beautiful cottage in good nick, in spite of progress around it - your Pohutukwa looks a lot like our pincushion protea, though ours is more of a shrub.

Thanks Dinah! Good idea to check it out next time you're around, it'd make a good place to fuel up before checking out the nearby Wynyard quarter.

Thanks Jimu! I think they were out very early this year, must be this hot weather we're having. Have a good time in the big smoke and a great Christmas.

Thanks Cathy! I've seen some of those proteas around the place, they are similar in lots of ways. The pohutukawa is a bit lighter in construction, maybe they have an ancient Gondwanaland connection?
