Flowering Pohutukawa have started appearing in my sketches — a sure sign that Christmas must be here! Pohutukawa are found along the coast of the upper North Island, the blooms come out around Christmas every year and have no petals, consisting instead of hundreds of bright red stamens.
This is Devonport above on Auckland's North Shore, looking up Devonport's main drag past the old Esplanade Hotel with pohutukawa in the foreground.
Below is the old green keepers cottage at Victoria Park in the city. It's had a bit of a make-over recently and is now the imaginatively named Green Keeper Cafe. Surrounded by Pohutukawa and Puka trees you hardly notice the traffic or that it's being monstered from behind by the glass Vodafone building. They do a pretty nice Tempera Prawn Po-boy too.
