Farewell Madiba

No matter how much we had prepared and were expecting it, the news that we woke up to this morning that Nelson Mandela had died jolted us with terrible loss and sadness. I wanted to be with others who were feeling the same way and drove to the street of the Mandela family home in Houghton. People had been gathering there all night and morning, laying flowers, lighting candles, singing, praying and dancing. Almost a celebratory atmosphere at times, it was reminiscent of the joyous and unifying days of Madiba's release from prison, our first democratic election and the Rugby World Cup. Once again people of every colour, religion, age and nationality are coming together all over the country with a common purpose, to pay homage to this amazing man of courage, wisdom and reconciliation - may his legacy be revived and continue.

Thanks for your lovely sketches and comments.
There will likely not be another leader like him and the world joins SA in honoring him.

Cathy, thanks for this beautiful and timely post. The news headlines about Mandela's death feel so dry in comparison. You brings us all to that street in Johannesburg with these lively sketches.

He was a giant who will be an inspiration for all time. And how wonderful to be there and to be able to share this historic event with us through your drawings.

His capacity for forgiveness was Christ or Buddha like, there are rarely people of this depth in any place or any time.
May his legacy be revived and continue indeed.
Excellent reportage Cathy.
