As usual for me, it was a chat-crawl. So hard to sit down and sketch when there are lots of new people to meet, or friends you haven't seen for ages. Despite being the organiser I managed to sneak off early on and do two quick sketches of the War Memorial….but then the chat-crawl began in earnest.
Still I managed to achieve a good chat-sketch balance all day …but I got home and realised that I was in a park all day and yet only sketched buildings! (hopeless!) I did have intentions of sketching some of the trees and the fountain and people but somehow when there is a lot of sketchers around, I go back to reflex sketching… which for me is architecture. It is also on my mind at the moment since I have sketching architecture classes/workshop coming up in November.
This is the most elaborate bubbler (the Frazer drinking fountain) in Sydney. A fancy little gothic structure is the landmark on the eastern edge of Hyde Park South and a lot of fun to draw even though I was having various conversations at the time and maintenance trucks kept driving past and I had to move twice (ended up with my stool in the garden area!)
After lunch a number stayed on - the others sketched the fountain but I did the view towards St Marys Cathedral…I just couldn't help myself!
It was a stunning day - fresh air blue skies and sun and we enjoyed the opportunity for being outside sketching together. We are currently in the middle of a horrific bushfire crisis in the areas surrounding Sydney and have had some dramatic smoke haze in recent days but Saturday was clear ..but our thoughts were certainly with those fighting the fires or coming to terms with losing all their possessions.
