During our trip through the western USA we visited this abandoned ghost town. It was called Calico, located near Barstow. Back in aroud 1880 this was a busy town with some 500 silver mines. Fifteen years later the silver ran out and the town was quickly deserted. I can't blame them, it was terribly hot over there, in the middle of the Mojave desert.
The town was reopened for tourists and restored into its old style.
But it is a weird place: nowadays we are used to walk around in Walt Disney Worlds or Las Vegas strips, where the fake looks more real than the real thing.
I had to remind myself constantly that a long time ago cowboys, miners, sheriffs and undertakers really walked these streets.
