The Gallery

Galleria Umberto I

I often included the Galleria Umberto's glass dome in my panoramas and already mentioned its dimensions, over sized. Here is an attempt of drawing it from the inside: as you see it covers a five floors building, creating an enormous cross-shaped space, always full of people walking by or sitting in cafès. In the night it becomes an unconventional football playground, that can hosts even four matches at the same time! Ideal place to refuge and sketch when it is raining, it probably deserves more drawings.

The Galleria Umberto is also the setting for The Gallery, a novel by the American writer John Horne Burns,  based on his experiences as a soldier in Naples, after the liberation of the city.

I love the light, loose hand in this with such understanding of the space--very beautiful!

Thank you. This was a quick sketch, less than 30' in a pocket size sketchbook. Sometimes is better to be in a hurry and to draw small, Gabi knows it perfectly.
