Winter urban swimming

lido mappatella

On January 3rd at sunset, two guys of maybe 13 years old were challenging each other in front of the sea:
- Gino, jump, if you are a man!
- I'm afraid of rats, he replies.
In the end, they both jumped. They had bet on their mobiles.

In Naples, like in other places near the sea, the first swim of the year is a collective challenge called cimento, that take place on January 1st, no matter how is the weather. This year we had warm days, with 15 °C minimum temperature. Nice, but I was wearing a padded jacket anyway.

- Where did you get this drawing? You made it?! How cool, this is me in underwear!

In Canada, it is called the Polar Bear run/swim. In some places, people have to make an opening in the ice sheet to get in the water.
Great sketch!
