My many Indias: Deep in South India

Tirunelveli, deep in South India is where my in-laws live. I visit every time I am in India, and it is a sketcher's paradise: crowds, chaos, narrow alleys where goats, people and motorbikes fight for space. I love capturing this distinctly South Indian landscape.
These two sketches are made from the front stoop of my in-law's home. The first one is on a quiet Sunday, the only day that the shop shutters are down, and relative peace reigns. The second one is the view looking down the street, towards the gopuram or gateway to the temple that stands in the center of every town. These gopurams are towering and covered in gaudily painted figures. They are meant to be imposing and to be spotted from a distance across the landscape. Telephone wires, phone cables, satellite dishes and cellphone towers all form part of the landscape of urban India.

And a closeup of the gopuram, sketched from inside the temple. It is rare for me to end up with a sketch with no people in it. But it was really unusually quiet because I sneaked into the temple when it was officially shut for the afternoon...

Lots more sketches from my stay in Tirunelveli here on my blog.

The Blog you are running is just awesome. The stuff and theme of the blog is so impressive. The actual match, like your blog, is found on very rare places. This blog is so clear and simple, there is no useless content you have added just to show a fake knowledge about the topic. I am new to blogging and picking lot from your blog. Here is my blog if you want to take a look and do suggest me if any problem or something missing.
Thanks a lot!!!

I love seeing the unfolding latest trip back to your homeland. Crowded, teaming with life and excitement--your drawings are supreme. Each drawing enhances the whole set. The middle one--motorcycles crowding the forefront, temple at the end of the street, canopied by wires, the man with moustache--is maybe my favorite thus far.

Very nice, and your style seems to suit the subject matter here. The wild colours remind me of pagodas and temples in China which also use vibrant colours.
You're making a wonderful travel series.
