Driving into the desert...and home again...

Leaving Los Angeles for a few days to spend some time in the desert during the Holiday season has become an annual tradition for me...we leave the city early in the morning, and I am drawing almost continuously in the passenger seat as we head out towards Joshua Tree National Park.  I love observing how the landscape becomes more expansive and elemental as we approach the desert...

Impressive - how do you do this? One quick glimpse and then you do it from memory?
