It seems all the church spires in this town are forced to compete with hydro poles for visual dominance.
I like all the visual clutter, it makes for a more interesting sketch. Of course an architectural rendering would eliminate everything other than the gleaming building, but I've come to like a true urban sketch much better.
As Marcia pointed out on flickr, the right half of the sketch combines many vertical elements to reinforce the proportions of the sketch, something I enjoy capturing.
There is a great collection of vertical sketches at this flickr group.

really nice composition. i like that pole and church both are cropped and so get an appropriatly balanced treatment
Yes, I think it has been a wise decission to avoid focusing on the complete facade of the church and, as Rolf states, cropping both. The resulting composition is very inspiring!
I like the double page format too, but I always seem to do it horizontally, not vertically. Your sketch encourages me to include that that on my 'more variety' list.
Brilliant decision to include the black covers of the skechbook in the scan Matthew, rather than crop within the actual sheets.
Very elegant drawing, Matthew!
