Election day in Berkeley, California. I had been studying the issues just fine, but for some reason I never got around to looking up where my polling place was until the morning of the election, only to find that this time my precinct had no polling place at all and that I had to mail in my ballot, only the deadline to apply for a mail-in ballot had passed the week before. So I got on the phone with the registrar and found out where I could go to fill out a provisional ballot, which turned out to be the commons of the nearby University of California freshman dorm, Unit 3. Remember, friends, always check early where your polling place is - it may have changed. Here is a quick sketch getting close to the front of the line which snaked through the long narrow underground hallways. The girl in front of me was highlighting text in a book she was reading. We got "I voted" stickers in our choice of languages. I watched the results come in later that night with friends in a downtown bar.
