Tahra mint Embara and Steven Shehan
The ladies of R'gueiba with the traditional drum
R'gueiba is one of the seven fishing villages inside the National Park of the Banc d'Arguin in the Mauritanian coast.
In January 2006 I spent a month living with a local family and sketching their daily life.
Like then the village still doesn't have electricity or running water, no sewage and its not connected to the rest of the country by a tarmac road.
After decades of just worrying about the environment, the Park, has been for the last years also trying to help its inhabitants - The Imraguens.
Different projects are being developed to protect this population and to create alternatives to mass exodus towards the city.
I was invited on a three day visit to see the work they're doing with the school children( I will soon post about it) but also travelling with us was a ardine player ( kind of harp) and Mauritanian singer Tahra mint Embara. She was meeting another musician Steven Shehan who's been visiting and registering the traditional music from the village women.
Tahra playing ardine Steve using two Berbere brooms to play the drum
Dahjeba playing the traditional drum
Men, women and children were enchanted by this concert. So was I.
