Urban Sketchers h
as its first high school group and blog. USK member and high school art teacher , Stephanie Lowe, with the help and encouragement of USK founder Gabi Campanario, organized a group of student sketchers at Animo Venice Charter High School in Los Angeles, CA to create Animo Urban Sketchers.
Stephanie says, “as an art teacher, my mission is to inspire a lifelong love of sketching in my students. Animo Urban Sketchers already has 25 members and 2 faculty advisors. The new
group is sketching on location in their Venice community and in their neighborhoods across Los Angeles in the unique sketch voice and vision of teenagers.”
Urban Sketchers Paris on French TV
On October 26, French TV channel Canal+ featured Urban Sketchers Paris in their weekday program, La Nouvelle Edition under the feature La Vie Autrement (“Living Differently” or “Another Side of Life”). The report (below) featured clips from the group’s October 15 Sketchcrawl, a few drawings from around the world, and mention of the upcoming book, The Art of Urban Sketching.

In late October, Montreal USK Correspondent, Marc Holmes‘ sketches (left) were featured along with an interview with Marc in Drink and Draw Montreal, a blog dedicated to promoting the art of drawing in Montreal. The author of the post noted that “Marc’s rich plein-air drawings and watercolours first caught our eye on Urban Sketchers, a website featuring the delicious sketch-work of over 100 talented location artists from around the world.”
Five USK Correspondents – Ea Ejersbo (Arhus, Denmark), Lapin (Barcelona), Roger O’Reilly (Kilkenny, Ireland), Miguel Herranz (Barcelona) and Nina Johansson (Stockholm) – participated in the Rendez-vous du Carnet de Voyage travel book festival in Clermont-Ferrand, France this month. Their participation included a presentation about Urban Sketchers during the festival’s exhibition.
USK Correspondent, Omar Jaramillo (Berlin), illustrated a piece called “A Fisherman’s Live” for the October issue of the Canadian magazine Uppercase, “a magazine for the creative and curious”. Earlier this month, Omar’s sketches from Turk coffeehouses in Berlin were used by the Ecuadorian newspaper, El Telégrafo, in an article (right) about the Turk emigration in Germany.
And to wrap up November, I just couldn’t resist sharing the photo below of USK Correspondent Gabi Campanario sketching his weekly piece for The Seattle Times. In honor of the United States Thanksgiving holiday, the intrepid sketch journalist really got up close and personal with one of his sketch subjects!
