Announcing the Dalvero Academy/Urban Sketchers Seattle Workshop

Urban Sketcher correspondents Veronica (Ronnie) Lawlor and Margaret Hurst, co-founders of Dalvero Academy, will be teaching a three-day workshop specifically geared to urban sketching enthusiasts on June 24 – 26, 2011 in Seattle, Washington.

The focus of this workshop will be drawing on location. Topics covered in the three days will include: dimension in your drawing, the importance of the thumbnail, picture design and direction, variation of calligraphy and marks in your drawing for greater expression, color, incorporating people in a scene, portraits, narrative content and the different materials of the location artist. We will review various artists and/or art movements for inspiration in our daily lectures. You will draw people every day! By successful completion of this workshop, participants will walk away with more confidence and have a greater sense of comfort and idea of what to capture on location. All competency levels welcome. Please email Veronica or Margaret for more info.

New Groups/Blogs

A new regional blog, Paris Urban Sketchers, was just started by artist Kim Marohn and other fellow sketchers in the City of Light. Kim says, “We love to get together and draw the iconic places and typical scenes in Paris as well as venture into the lesser know parts of town for ballades insolites as they’re called.” She invites fellow sketchers who are passing through the city to look up the Paris Sketchers when you are in town – they’d love to meet you for coffee, a beer or an afternoon of drawing!

Urban Sketchers in the News

Several sketches by Malaga, Spain USk correspondent, Luis Ruiz, were just featured on the delightful lines and colors blog.

Madrid, Spain USk correspondent, Richard Camara, was interviewed about drawing and sketching on TV last month. Watch the interview in Portugese.

USk member Sue Pownall is featured in a Blog Art Exhibition and interview (including mention of Urban Sketchers) on Trade Your Talent.

The Italian blog comicom just did a nice interview with Christian Cornia, a member of Urban Sketchers Italy, all about urban sketching and sketchcrawls.

Artists Help Japan

And finally, sketchers across the world have wondered how they might help in the aftermath of the Japan disaster last month. Artists Help Japan Earthquake & Tsunami Fund is responding to the needs of survivors through short-term to long-term recovery projects undertaken by the affected communities. The fund was founded by Dice Tsutsumi, an art director at Pixar Animation Studios and is partnering with Give2Asia.

Happy sketching,
