Meet the correspondents: KANDERN, Germany > Rob Carey

"The village of Kandern is located in southwestern Germany, at the bend of the Rhine River, just minutes from the borders of Switzerland and France. This makes an ideal location for sketching a variety of images, from the crowded streetcars of Basel, to the half-timbered houses of the Alsace region. But I equally enjoy the old farmhouses just down the road, the ones with the gaping cracks and the crooked shutters; houses that hold hundreds of memories and stories from years gone by. Until recently, my sketching consisted of chalkboard doodles for my students, but this year I began working in a sketchbook with pencils, fine point pens and watercolor."

Hello,

I have been online searching the internet for other plein air artists and I have seen your work on your website. On last month I began a new website that I hope you will go to and join: pleinairartists.ning.com.

Already some really fine artists have joined and I am very gratified by their interest. I just one month since it began we already have over 360 artists. There is no fee, no jury and world-wide. It is open to everyone who paints outdoors on location. So beginners can learn and be inspired by the masters. There is also a good market here to advertise your workshops.

I have been painting on location for over 40 years, but I am new at making a website. I want to make this the online meeting place. A real down to earth kind of site to publicize events, exchange ideas, express yourself, and of course, make new friends. I already feel that I have made several new friends as I have welcomed new members and are able to chat back and forth with them. So it’s already working the way that I thought it would.

I hope to see you when you log in.

Thanks,
Don Maier

Rob,

I remember you as a very talented artist and a real nice guy in high school. Your recent artwork is fantastic. Glad to see you are doing well.

Tim? Long....time no see! How did you hear about Urban Sketchers?

My wife received a note card with your art on it, I think. (European Village sketch?) So I looked you up, and Google led me to Urban Sketchers. My lack of artistic talent doesn't keep me from having a great appreciation for yours. I really enjoy checking in to see your latest work.

Hope to see you next summer. Especially enjoyed your August 5th post. What kind of pen do you sketch with?
